What is liquidation merchandise?
Liquidation is a way that retailers, distributors and other businesses move merchandise they no longer plan to sell through their ordinary channels. Goods may be brand-new, excess stock, discontinued lines, customer returns or imperfect packages. “Liquidation” does not automatically mean an item is new or defective.
The terms you'll see
Overstock
Products held beyond the quantity needed by an original seller. Overstock goods may be new, but the packaging and exact condition should still be checked.
Open-box
Packaging has been opened or is no longer factory-sealed. Product condition and completeness vary; accessories may be missing.
Shelf pulls
Merchandise removed from retail shelves, sometimes after a promotion or seasonal change. Shelf wear or stickers may be present.
Returns
Products returned by customers for a range of reasons. Returns can be unopened, used, incomplete or nonfunctional.
Closeouts
Products being cleared from a line, assortment or business inventory. Closeout products may never have been sold to a consumer.
What should shoppers compare?
Before deciding whether something is a bargain, look at condition, completeness, usefulness and price. A low price only makes sense if the item actually works for what you need. Any store testing, warranty or return terms should be checked at the point of sale.
